KAPSARC held its first workshop on China’s Energy Economy on April 28-29, 2014 in Hong Kong. The KAPSARC research team unveiled their plans to develop a toolkit to aid in the analysis of policy scenarios affecting the future of China’s energy economy and the functioning of Chinese energy systems, and invited comment and feedback from experts from around the world.Workshop participants included delegates from the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Social Science; Chinese and Asian universities; NGOs such as the Natural Resources Defense Council and the World Resource Institute; and private consultants, major corporations and non-Chinese think tanks, including the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan. There were also representatives from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.Focused on the challenges practitioners face when modeling such complex system as China’s energy economy, the workshop stimulated an active exploration of the nature of these challenges (including poor data) along with possible solutions.
